The “Monuments and Markers” section is central to the larger online exhibition and allows you to explore a representative sample of the Civil War monuments and markers at Rosehill Cemetery.

The monuments and markers selected are located in eastern Rosehill.  Most are congregated near the William W. Boyington gate, in a section now informally known as the “Civil War Section.”  Others are in sections immediately north and west.  Rosehill Cemetery was not populated chronologically, meaning that monument/marker locations within the cemetery are a result of availability of lots and preference of purchaser, rather than interment or installation date.

The map at right, created by the site creator, shows the approximate locations of all of the monuments and markers explored in this section of the exhibit.

The subsections within are arranged by type, beginning with the most prominent Civil War Monument in the cemetery, the Our Heroes: Civil War Monument.  Other subsections address monuments to individual batteries and Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) posts, and the individual grave markers of officers, enlisted soldiers, and unknown soldiers.  When applicable, the pages within each subsection are sorted chronologically by interment date.

“Monuments and Markers” features modern photos and excerpts from historical newspapers.  A majority of the newspaper articles have been transcribed to allow for easy reading.  Interpretation in these subsections is purposefully minimal.

Enjoy moving through the content, studying the images, and exploring nineteenth century news.  When you’re done, click through the “The Public, The Cemetery, and the Civil War” section for more information or check out the “Conclusion” for some final thoughts.
